“Hoodies Up” Rally for Trayvon Martin
“Hoodies Up” Rally: Bonded by Association
Acts against Violence in Memory of Trayvon Martin
Columbus Community Action agencies, Church Ministries and individuals alongside student organizations from The Ohio State University- including the collegiate branch of the NAACP, National Pan-Hellenic Council, and the Black Student Association- will be hosting a rally in support of the Trayvon Martin case. The rally will take place on Friday, March 30, 2012 on the campus of The Ohio State University from 5p-8p at the Browning Amphitheater (Rain site: Great Hall Meeting room located inside of the Ohio Union).
Seventeen year old Trayvon Martin, an African American Florida native, was shot and killed on February 26, 2012, by a self appointed neighborhood watch captain, George Zimmerman. Upon arrival of the police, witnesses stated that they heard a scuffle, a plea for help from Trayvon and Zimmerman standing over the young boy with a handgun and bloody nose. Martin had not been armed, and was stated to be walking home from a convenience store carrying a juice and a bag of skittles. Zimmerman has yet to be brought to justice. (ABC News) In support of the family of Trayvon Martin, civic engagement efforts and community awareness, various organizations will be coming together to discuss, reflect and provide solutions for social injustices that involve violence, specifically against our youth and African American/minority individuals. The rally will also provide awareness about our court systems and issues with the arrest of George Zimmerman.
With expected attendance of 300+ people we are proud to create an additional opportunity for students, community leaders and action oriented groups to come together in a well organized and non-violent manner for social peace and equality. While admission to the rally is free, sponsors will provide opportunities for individuals to donate monetary gifts for the family of Trayvon Martin and Columbus action groups such as S.A.V.E (Students Against Violence Everywhere). We cordially invite attendees to provide media coverage for the event, volunteer, photograph/record, and/or provide donations for the stated initiatives. Refreshments will be provided.
